Statement Opposing US Proposal to Tax Tuition Waivers

Published November 29, 2017

The Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies joins 33 other scholarly associations to oppose the Congressional proposal to tax graduate student tuition waivers as income. Taxing tuition waivers as income would place an unsustainable financial burden on graduate students living on modest stipends and would have a devastating effect on higher education.

ASEEES urges all concerned members in the US to contact their members of Congress to oppose this provision and urge them to maintain the tax exemption.
