CfA: Undergraduate Cybersecurity Lab to Advance Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in REEES

PROGRAM DETAILS:
Work with faculty, policy experts, and other students to study disinformation and how it relates to Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia.
Take a guided tour of St. Petersburg with SRAS.
Receive remote access to the research collections and scholarly databases of the U. of Illinois Library. Join training workshops and networking sessions as part of the Virtual Summer Research Laboratory on Russia, East Europe, and Eurasia. These research programs are supported by the US Dept. of State and co-hosted by the Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center (REEEC) and the Slavic Reference Service (SRS) at Illinois.
Write a policy brief and present a group report to a panel of government experts at a virtual Undergraduate Disinformation Policy Competition on October 23, 2021.
Attend the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies virtual conference in November 2021.
Policy reports will be published on the program website upon completion.
Each student will receive a stipend of $900.
The program organizers will consider applications from all undergraduate students and strongly encourage students of color to apply.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:
Program duration: May-November 2021 Participants must:
Be a full-time student enrolled at a US community college, college, or university.
Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Be available for occasional Friday Zoom meetings from 4-6 p.m. (Eastern).
Join in remote training workshops and networking sessions organized by the Virtual Summer Research Laboratory at the University of Illinois.
Present policy reports to a panel of government experts at a virtual Undergraduate Disinformation Policy Competition on October 23.
Complete individual policy briefs and collaborative policy reports that will be published on the program website.
Russian language knowledge is NOT required. The program organizers only ask that participants have a desire to learn more about this region!
HOW TO APPLY:
The application requires students to write short essays on the following topics:
Share with us what diversity, equity, and inclusion mean to you and why they are important.
Explain how this program will help advance your academic and professional goals.
Describe how you would empower and support members of your research team.
Explain why disinformation and cybersecurity are important public issues in the United States.
Tell us what experience you already have in Russian studies, cybersecurity studies, or data science research, If you don’t have any experience in these fields, that’s OK!
