ASEEES Internship Grant Program

The Internship Grant Program promotes the entry of young scholars with Russian studies expertise into sectors outside traditional academia, including not-for-profit and non-governmental organizations, business/trade councils, government, media, the arts, museums, publishers, and other non-academic sectors.

Internship Grant Program

Funded by an external grant, ASEEES’s Internship Grant Program provides incoming, current, and recent (i.e. those who have graduated no more than two years prior to the competition deadline) MA, PhD, and professional school students with grants that make it possible for them to accept unpaid or underpaid internships in areas broadly related to Russia, including Russia’s relations with other regions/countries.

The grant offers $2,000 a month, to be paid directly to the grantee (intern) during their internship. In the case of underpaid internships, ASEEES will work with the host institutions and the grantees to make sure the grantee receives a combined stipend of $2,000 per month or has an extended duration for the internship.

Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must:

be an incoming (with proof of matriculation), current, or recent (i.e. those who have graduated no more than two years prior to the competition deadline) graduate student in a degree-granting institution in the US or, if a US citizen, in a degree-granting institution anywhere in the world;
be able to provide proof of an internship offer at the time of application (see internship requirements below);
have specialized in or be currently in an graduate degree program specializing in Russian studies;
become ASEEES members upon acceptance of the grant (ASEEES membership is not required at the time of application).

Undergraduates are not eligible for the ASEEES Internship Grant Program.

Grantees may participate in an existing internship program or work with an organization to create a new one. To be approved, internships must:

be substantial in duration (20-25 hours per week) and responsibilities;
take place in the US (grantees may hold remote internships, pending approval);
correspond with the program’s mission, providing grantees with professional work experience outside of academic settings;
last either two (2) or four (4) months, taking place either in the summer or during an academic semester.

Potential Host Institutions

Internships may not take place at a grantee’s home institution.

Recipients will be notified of their status by early June.

Application Requirements

Completed online application form, including:
- Outline of career objectives (max. 500 words)
Internship description, detailing the organization where you will be interning, the expected duties of the internship, the internship’s relationship to Russian studies, the expected outcomes of the experience, your career objectives, and how your internship will provide you with new professional work experience relating to Russian studies beyond academia and help you to achieve your long-term goals
Host organization questionnaire confirming internship offer, completed and signed by internship supervisor
Academic cv (preferred) or professional resume
Graduate transcripts OR proof of matriculation in graduate program (for incoming students only)
One (1) letter of reference from individuals (such as an advisor or employer) who can speak to your preparedness for the proposed internship and your background in Russian studies.

Application Notes

Review the program website and the application form to make sure you are eligible and that you have the necessary information and documents to upload.
You can save an incomplete draft of the application and return to it later. However, once you hit “Submit”, you will not be able to edit.
It is your responsibility to make sure that your reference letters are submitted by your referees prior to the deadline. You should let them know that they will receive an email prompting them to upload their letters. Please make sure to communicate whether you are applying by the March or May deadline.
The application deadline is firm. No late applications will be accepted.
Do not send any applications to ASEEES via e-mail or mail. All documents must be uploaded on the online application site. Do not send your transcripts, proposals or other documents to the ASEEES office. They will be discarded.
