Leah Valtin-Erwin holds a PhD in Eastern European History from Indiana University Bloomington (2023), an MA in Global Studies and Russian and East European Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2018), and a BA in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Eastern and Central European Studies from Hampshire College (2016). Prior to joining the ASEEES staff, she served as editor of the Society for Romanian Studies’ newsletter, as graduate assistant for the Polish Studies Center at Indiana University Bloomington, and as President of the Romanian Studies Organization at Indiana University Bloomington.

Leah’s work within the scholarly community is grounded in a commitment to making the structures and norms of the academic profession more transparent and navigable. Her experience in professional development programming for graduate students and junior scholars has included leading weekly writing and accountability groups, running workshops on grant proposals and academic job documents, and organizing the Eastern European Studies Dissertation Incubator (2023). At ASEEES, she oversees the Mentoring Program, the Exploring Career Diversity Program, and a range of career-related workshops, roundtables, and seminars, and has designed initiatives including Managing Mid-Career Milestones (2024-25) and the ongoing Research Meetup Series,  addressing professional development issues across career stages.
