Theodora Dragostinova

Candidate for Member at Large, 2020

Theodora Dragostinova is Associate Professor of History at The Ohio State University. Her work focuses on nationalism, migration, Cold War culture, and global perspectives on eastern Europe. A native of Bulgaria, she completed her PhD in History at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2005. She is the author of Between Two Motherlands: Nationality and Emigration among the Greeks in Bulgaria, 1900-1949 (Cornell UP, 2011). She is the co-editor of Beyond Mosque, Church, and State: Alternative Narratives of the Nation in the Balkans (CEU Press, 2016) and the thematic cluster, “Beyond the Iron Curtain: Eastern Europe and the Global Cold War,” Slavic Review (Fall 2018). Her most recent book, The Cold War from the Margins: A Small Socialist State on the Global Cultural Scene, will appear with Cornell University Press in 2021.

Dragostinova serves on the Advisory Board of Ohio State’s Center for Slavic and Eastern European Studies and is affiliated with the Mershon Center for international Security Studies. In 2013-14, she participated in the Sawyer Seminar for the Comparative Studies of Culture, “CrossRoads: Culture, Politics, and Belief in the Balkans and South Asia.” Recently, she has helped develop crossdisciplinary collaborations at Ohio State through her work on The Global Mobility Project and as a Faculty Fellow for the Global Arts & Humanities Discovery Theme. Dragostinova brings to ASEEES a strong research record, passion for international education, extensive collaborative research, teaching, public outreach experiences, and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary work. In addition to supporting the core mission of the organization, as a Member-at-Large on the ASEEES Board she will be excited to help promote its diversity efforts and advance its crossdisciplinary profile.
