Clare Cavanagh

Candidate for Member-At-Large


Clare Cavanagh is Chair, Slavic Languages and Literatures, and Professor of Slavic and Comparative Literatures at Northwestern University.  She received the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Orbis Prize in Polish Studies, and a Choice Outstanding Academic Title for her most recent book, Lyric Poetry and Modern Politics: Russia, Poland, and the West (Yale UP, 2010).   She has translated over a dozen books of Polish poetry and prose, including Wisława Szymborska, Map: Collected and Last Poems (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2015) (with Stanisław Barańczak).  She was Associate Editor for the Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics (2012) and is working on an authorized biography of the Nobel Prize-winning poet Czesław Miłosz, Czesław Miłosz and His Age: A Critical Life (under contract, Farrar, Straus, and Giroux).  

Her  honors include fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the NEH, ACLS, and SSRC; the PMLA William Riley Parker Award; PEN Prize for Outstanding Translation (with Stanisław Barańczak); AATSEEL Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Book; and AATSEEL Prize for Outstanding Translation.  She has served on the ASEEES Orbis Prize Committee and the ASEEES Book Publishing Committee; this is her third term on the editorial board of the Slavic Review.  Other editorial boards include: The Real Twentieth Century (book series, Academic Studies Press), Postcolonial Perspectives on Eastern Europe (book series, Peter Lang), Eastern European Politics and Societies, Modernism/Modernity, Slavonica, and Postcolonial Europe (Stockholm).   She is chair of the newly formed Russian and Eastern European Studies Working Group at Northwestern University, and serves on the Northwestern University Press Board.
