ASEEES Statement Against Racism and Intolerance

Published September 19, 2017

Disturbed by recent events both in the United States and in other countries where our members live and work, the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies categorically rejects all forms of racism and intolerance, including white supremacy, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, xenophobia, and homophobia. As a scholarly society, we affirm our support for the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion, which are foundational to the tenets of academic freedom. We stand with all who support the right of individuals to study and to work without threats or fear. We believe that members of our profession can play a role in combatting intolerance and hatred both by promoting tolerance in the classroom and by investigating in a scholarly manner the origins and appeal of phenomena that endanger basic human rights and academic freedom.
